The new year always means a new list of goals, and if we're honest, "find new clients" is probably on it. But finding new interior design clients doesn't do much good if they aren't your ideal client. Figuring out who your ideal client actually is should come well before "find new clients." It's that important.

Find Your Client Niche

Eventually, for your own sanity and your business's financial well-being, you'll have to niche. Think about the type of person who could benefit from your specific services: what does their day typically look like, what software do they use, what sort of client do they serve, what's their budget, and what are their values?

5 Strategies to Find Your Ideal Client

1. Determine who you don't want to work with. What personality type do you not get along with? What communication style makes collaboration efficient? If a client doesn't align, they're not your ideal client.

2. Pain points. Your ideal client's pain points depend on the services you offer. Narrow your target audience to the people who really need your specific skills, and it becomes far easier to show them your value.

3. Scour job pages. How do people approach the search for help? What are they asking for, and what seems to be their biggest frustration? It's easy to spot the people you would and wouldn't want to work with based on their listings and profiles.

4. Establish your own brand. Knowing who you are makes it easier to know who they are. People are attracted to businesses that seem like-minded, a strong brand naturally draws in others with similar interests, personalities, and values.

5. Referrals. Word of mouth is strong in the interior design world. Get testimonials from current clients, and consider offering a small perk for recommendations, the power of a good review is unmatchable.

"Zeroing in on your target audience and creating content specifically for them will NOT make you lose clients. In fact, deciding on who I want to work with and who I am a good fit for has only increased my revenue.", Kelly, Witt & Company
