Depending on your personality, the word "networking" can instill either fear or a thrill. But as a business owner, networking is an invaluable tool for finding not only other like-minded business owners, but future clients. Interior designers rely heavily on word-of-mouth marketing and connections throughout the industry, for services, contractors, virtual assistants, and so much more.

The Power of Networking

"Design to communicate, not just decorate.", Tony Stanton

The true power of networking is the deeper connection we make with like-minded individuals who contribute to the same industry we do. Mutual interests, a desire to better the industry, mentors or friends to turn to for advice, and a sense of community all grow out of networking.

Roughly 60% of jobs are obtained through networking. For interior designers, it could be the key to unlocking a whole new client list, internal team, or PR through referrals.

Leveraging Connections

Once you've made a connection, it's time to leverage it. A simple follow-up email after an event, including something personal as a reminder, goes a long way. If you've made a few good personal connections, plan a coffee date to keep the conversation going.

Offer to share resources, gather favorite contractors, sample sites, and virtual assistants into a shared list with your new connections. And stay proactive: shape your requests around doing some of the legwork yourself, rather than expecting others to always follow through.

Explore out-of-industry events too. Entrepreneur groups, small business meetups, or events built around a personal interest can introduce you to people you'd never otherwise meet.

From Experience

I joined a networking group from the start of opening JBVO with other virtual businesses catering to interior designers. It was responsible for my initial referrals, testimonials, and was an amazing sounding board while I was gathering experience. I also became a member of IDS as my area started a new chapter. The business practices, vendor resources, and industry partner connections gained through IDS networking events are an education I'd pay for over and over again.

Networking for Interior Design Virtual Assistants

Interior design virtual assistants have just as much to gain from interior design networking events as designers themselves. If you're looking to niche into the interior design industry, sign up for events in that space and make connections.

Conclusion

Your network is all about reciprocity. Be ready to offer as much as you ask for, and be a proactive member of your new network. A few good, quality connections are better than hundreds of weak, passive ones.
